Welcome to HotelGuide.Networks' directory of hotels and hotel reviews for Marseille, France!

The Mediterranean coastal town of Marseille, founded as Massalia by Greek sailors in 6th century BC, occupies almost twice the area of Paris, but is only second in population density to the nation's capital. With a history of centuries of political intrigue, smuggling and piracy, as well as cultural cross-pollination brought from every corner of the Mediterranean to the Cote d'Azur, the Vieux Port of Marseille is the cultural center of what remains of the Old World. The rocky coastline, with the cliffs of the French Alps in the background, offers many unusual sunbathing as well as scenic hiking opportunities. North African culture blends with French provincial culture in Marseille, contributing to the unique gastronomy of Provence and the Riviera, and to its most famous regional seafood stew, called Bouillabaisse, for which there are as many variations as there are chefs, but none more authentic than in Marseille. Provencal vineyards flourish in this mountain and sea climate, producing rich red wines and balanced whites that perfectly complement the regional cuisine. The French national anthem, "La Marseillaise," honors the importance in French history of this unique and magical area ironically so unlike any other region in France.
